I am lifting twice what I started with in the gym. Most importantly, my fasting blood sugar was 115-125, and today was 98. This is the first time it has been below 100 in several months. I am eating more than I was and not snacking. I am waiting 4 to 5 hours between meals and not eating after 6 or 7, making my morning meal at least 12 hours after my last evening meal. I am sting at least 30 gms protein at each meal. 70 gms fat total for the day , 10 gms carbs total for the day. no %. Just total gms. I a kind of excited. In a month I shall post inches lost and total weight lost...every 30 days. I had no headache today...1st time in a couple weeks.

Down 5 pounds since Monday.
Upped the chest press weights by 30 pounds today
No headache...thats good.
went out in 37* today 0 wind...paddle boarded. 25 minutes. I went in when I could feel my feet begin to get numb. It was awesome.

lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17688047404580674505noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5605164818011967018.post-65928300848778333792014-12-02T13:31:00.001-08:002014-12-02T15:20:49.578-08:00Day 2 OKLI did it. Yesterday I followed the macros of the diet pretty well. I woke up this morning 2 pounds down. I ate fewer fat grams then recommended. I am slightly fat phobic. I have enough to live off of for awhile. I am thirstier than normal. I also woke up with a headache. I have not had one for four days. This is not a surprise. I usually HAVE a headache every morning.

I worked out at the YMCA yesterday upper body, back, arms, chest weight machines. I am being careful until I regain my tendon flexibility. But, today I have DOMS, so I must have done it right. Something about lifting weights that lifts my spirits. I drive home with a smile, usually singing.

Tonight is High Intensity Bike.
I turned 60 this week

My hair brush is also always full of hair which is beginning to worry me.

Headaches are worse... way worse...of course I do have a brain tumor/injury.

A friend recommended a new web site with information about Optimal Protein. I have been studying it..

I saw a post today on a different diabetic site from a man who has low Hemoglobin and was wondering if it was common on a LCHF diet...Warning bells went off.

I never thought LCHF could be the cause of this.

I have gone to give blood twice and been found to have too low of hemoglobin. That never has happened to me ever. I am very tired after work and come home exhausted. That never used to happen either.

Ive gained two inches around my waist in spite of working out and giving this my best efforts .

SO>>>>

I do believe that the N=1 experiment here needs to change up a bit and my macros need to change. Fat needs to go down and protein up... After all it is my very own N=1 experiment. 6 months was a good try.

The experiment continues...
Not paddle boarding at this time. Too Cold....but if the wind dies down, and I have a day off,,,,......

I am getting back to keeping the monster asleep. It's vital now.

I took a major detour for a few months. We took a wonderful vacation in Hawaii last winter. I sustained a head injury while hiking in the rain forest of Kuai. I began to have chronic headaches after we came home. I almost got T-Boned a few times while driving. I just did not see the car coming on my left side.

It was not easy to focus. I was forgetting things. So my doctor sent me for an MRI. I've had 4 so far. A thumb print sized tumor showed up near the back of the left frontal lobe.

There are many days, I feel blessed just to wake up. And I do feel blessed. Things could be worse. So far the tumor appears to not be growing. It just aggravates me. Causes pain. More lately. I usually wake up about 3 am with a headache. The doctor and radiologist have ruled out everything except Brain injury and cancer. Ive been to Chicago to Northwestern for MRI's. I've also had MRI here in LaPorte. None of them have given me any idea of care. None. I would not take meds anyway. Its not like I am deficient in a pain med.....

I paddle boarded anyway all summer. I forced myself to go out every day I could with a headache. I did not weed my gardens. Luckily there is so much mulch and perennials do not need much care. I could not tell. I have not quilted.

So the keto diet has become very important to me. My new neurologist said the Keto diet is hogwash. I've been studying up on it for a few weeks. There are conflicting views on how to stay healthy on a leto diet. More fat or more protein. I started out on the more fat and gained more fat....

Not exactly the results I was looking for. I gave it a good try. I struggled with allergies many high fat foods. Avocado makes me sneeze. Cream gave me eczema. Coconut oil seems to be ok.

Optimal Keto was a Facebook site referred to me by a friend. I've spent this week searching the results of others in the group. I am ready to start....anew.

I decided ...what the heck...maybe I will discover the reasons for my headaches. I have already cut out grains, beans, sugars and all processed foods. Now I was asked to cut out dairy...what's left? Well 4 days into it, I stopped having headaches. dang...why dairy? Probably because I love it on too many non paleo foods. So now I am dairy free and so far headache free.

I attended a cookout at Dana Carpenters home in Bloomington Indiana. I was able to meet Jimmy Moore and his lovely wife Christine. I met Dr James Carlson and his wife. I met Dana and Eric. What a wonderful group of people. Any Dungan and Rebecca Skvorc Latham. The both have low carb blogs. Everyone at the cookout is working on N=1 experiments. Everyone has differing degrees of metabolic syndrome and is trying to find the sweet spot of health. It was pretty enlightening speaking with Dr Carlson.. He is very personable and lights up when asked about health issues. He informed me that according to my blood sugar readings I am a type II diabetic.lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17688047404580674505noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5605164818011967018.post-2295442512546840552013-07-26T12:01:00.001-07:002013-07-26T12:20:35.546-07:00My first Paddle board race. I was in a standup paddle board race in St Joe Michigan the end of June. I finished and I was not last...The water was 53*. I found that out by being cut off and knocked in by a 20 something racer. I was the oldest racer that day. The race did a 5 K and a 10 K . I am glad I participated. I am not sure if I will do it again. I really like to paddle> I like looking for wild life and just clearing my head. Concentrating on not running into anyone and trying to finish faster than I usually travel is not my cup of tea. The lady in the black shirt and the black shorts finished after me. The woman at the back here with the baseball hat on and the green capri's is my hero. She is an EMT. I met her after the race. She was injured on her job and got a knee replacement 3 weeks before the race. She passed me during the race. She said she worked the whole race to do it. As she passed me I yelled out " You are looking pretty good passing me up there!!" It was fun... I was tired afterwords. I think hitting the icy water and then swimming to my board may have had something to do with that, I am in the bright blue tank top in the center of the pic. My bright yellow/orange life jacket on my back and I and holding my paddle straight up and down waiting for the starting horn.
It has been raining and storming on and off for two weeks. You think that could be the cause for my daily headaches??? Today was thunder and lightning and pouring down rain. Earlier in the week, it rained so hard that our basement flooded. I don't think the monster is awake. I have been in ketosisland for awhile now.

On the upside...my husband bought me a new truck...my old age sports car. I needed a new paddle board hauler with better mileage and not so high a lift kit in it. We bought a used Ford Ranger splash. This thing sat in a garage for 7 years. Only has 63,000 miles on it. We got it for less than half of blue book price. It has a whole new front end and new paint job. Beautiful. I usually do not care about what I drive as long as it runs good. I love my new truck. I'll post a picture when I get some down loaded. lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17688047404580674505noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5605164818011967018.post-63259182771642174792013-06-11T17:40:00.002-07:002013-06-11T17:40:40.542-07:0078* winds at 2 mph. Today was perfect...I perfect day to paddle. There were a few kayaks out. Lots of swimmers on the small beach. A couple people asked me about my board. It would be fun to see more SUP's out on the lake. My doctor just called me and asked me that question. At 730 am this morning on his way to work.

My journey has come from numerous blogs, books, emails, podcasts....etc. I was put on the spot, I'd have to think about it. So I am thinking about it.

First off I said... "Genocide, How your doctors dietary ignorance will kill you." Dr James Carlson

My doctor has my book, but has never read it...( hmmm...does not help if you do not open it)

Then I guess, "Protein Power Life Plan." Dr's Michael and Mary Eades...their Purist diet in the book is closer to Paleo than the other two programs they suggest.

After that, I would promote " Marks Daily Apple" blog

Jimmy Moore and his podcast " Livin la Vida Low carb "

I also read Paleo Diet by Loren Cordain

Paleo Answer by Loren Cordain

Books by Robb Wolf ( Paleo Solution), Volek and Phinney ( Art and Science of Low carb living), Atkins, Dr William Davis(Wheat Belly), Dianne Sanfilippo (Practical Paleo) Mark Sisson ( the Primal Blueprint).

By the way. many of these books speak about the evolution of man. I think that the whole Paleo thing should not be about mans evolution but about the evolution of FOOD. Thank you, thank you very much.

As a side note...a patient was in our office yesterday. Her boyfriend works at a place that takes grain and makes it into wheat germ, wheat germ oil and flour. The processing plant also extracts vitamins from grains and add vitamins to grains. (sprays them) They sell their products to cookie and bread and cereal factories. When a train car of grain comes in that is full of bugs, the close it up, bug bomb it, air it out and then process the grain with all the bugs and the bug bomb residue. Business as usual. This girl has stopped eating processed food. DUH!!!

Katy was born to my baby sister on New years day. Orion was born to my daughter on February 8!! I am so blessed!

I have been working on a quilt all month for Orion. An Adaptation of this shooting star wall hanging. I needed to adapt it to be baby quilt sized. My squares were all 2,5 inches square and the whole quilt top is finished now. 6 more feet of binding to sew on by hand and I will be ready to take it with me this Thursday when I go to see my brand new grandson.....Orion...A shooting star to go with my little constellation who just fell to earth.
Like pancakes and sausage. with butter and real maple syrup? So far I settled for half an avocado. Hope that does the trick. SO far I have found that cravings are caused by the need for more fat. Bullet Proof coffee works!

I woke up today at 6 am. The test strip showed I was in Ketosis...YAY! That does not happen too often. It made me happy to see. I often wonder if I am. It is happening so slow that I do not see a scale weight change for days.

I drank some bullet proof coffee this morning and then set myself up outside to scrape and paint windows.I don't need to place pretend spider webs on my house for Halloween, My house is covered with them already. I cleaned a zillion spider webs, spiders and eggs off of the windows before I could scrape them. I was covered with spider webs. All day I swatted my head and neck. I was sure they were crawling all over me. I worked at it all day. At 3:30 pm my husband pulled into the driveway. I realized that I did not eat all day long. I did drink a little water. Bullet proof coffee is the bomb. I scraped and painted and washed the windows. Next I painted the garage door and trim. I painted the back door to the garage and the trim around it. Now both doors are dark Brick red. The same color as the shutters. I love the way they turned out..

Amazing day. I got a lot accomplished.

When I was painting the outside of the windows I noticed that the wood on the inside windows in the triple track has peeling varnish. So I need to urethane them all. That means taking the triple track windows all out to get to them... Gonna be a long day tomorrow. I need to take them all out from the inside and leave the windows slightly open, then go outside to urethane the wood. While they are all out, I can wash the rest of the windows and clean the dead bugs out of the window sills. ( I really do not want to do it) Triple tracks are not air tight . I even find small tree frogs, (dead and dried up) between the windows sometimes. creepy.creepy creepy. When it is done, I will be glad I did it.

I ate grilled sirloin and broccoli for dinner and later had half a can of macadamia nuts.

Went to a women's bible study on the book of Romans ..Good study...

That's about it. I did not work out today...I th ink my painting WAS a workout.

I dumped 10 contractor wheel barrow's of trimmings.
It took me an hour to paddle 2 miles. One way was against the wind. The going was hard. The wind was chilly but I was sweating. Some fishermen were in hooded sweatshirts with jackets over them. They called out to me and wanted to know how I could be out in a tee shirt in the cold wind. I told them I had worked up a sweat. I was too hot to leave my life jacket on and had it at my feet.

Right now I am aching...My head is stuffed up. I believe I have a virus. Ugg...How do you deal with a cold Paleo style?
I have been sad this week. We turned our furnace on last night. Frost warnings were out. I thought my SUP days were done for the year.
Tomorrow will be mid 70's Gotta take them when they come. Tonight I trimmed hedges and wheeled wheel barrows full of the stuff well after dark, so that tomorrow I won't feel guilty. I plan to take advantage of the beautiful day.lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17688047404580674505noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5605164818011967018.post-91384644913837421902012-09-23T14:05:00.003-07:002012-09-23T14:06:51.356-07:00A new grandblessing on the way.

I am excited. I am going to have a new grand blessing.I could not be more happy about it. My little girl is gonna be a fantastic mama. I'm headed to St Croix in February to help for a week or so.I am really looking forward to cuddling little Orion.

I am 57. By the time this baby is 20, I will be 77. My parents age now. What shape will I be in? Will I still be paddle boarding with my grand blessings? Hiking 5 miles a day? . I definitely don't want to be on the porch in a rocking chair.

For today...I'll be out walking if you need me. She is 44 and this is her first baby. We could not be more excited...
We had loads of food. Some of it was not Paleo, or low carb. I stuck to the fresh raw vegetables, a few bites of coleslaw, a few strawberry slices out of the fruit salad ,and the deviled eggs. I also ate a couple skewers of grape tomatoes and mozzarella cubes with olive oil and fresh basil drizzled on them . I by passed the punch, the sliced wraps, the beautiful sunshine cupcakes and the brownies, the jello, the white chocolate dipped grapes with chopped nuts, the individual layered taco dip, It all looked good, but ketogenically speaking , I did not feel hungry for anything that would spoil my keto adapted body. Wha hoo.

The baby shower was awesome. Jenny received many beautiful things. I was so glad to visit with her. She lives 12 hours away. It was nice to see cousins and Aunts and nieces and tiny great nieces and nephews.

I am exhausted from running up and down stairs, at my mothers home, and glad to be home sitting at the computer. It feels like midnight already. It's only 8 o'clock.

I sent EVERYTHING except the raw vegetables home with my grand kids and others.lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17688047404580674505noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5605164818011967018.post-55006314198327184602012-09-14T19:35:00.001-07:002012-09-14T19:37:27.732-07:00We looked at the houseWe looked at the house with 6 acres. It is passable. Meaning, I can breathe in it. There is no mold. It is a tad bit small...but trading a house in town for 6 acres in the country not far from town my make it all worth while. It'll take $5000.000 to fence around 4 acres. Sheesh...I had no idea it cost so much for fence.

Next week we are looking at a house on 12 acres. The neighbor wants 6 of it which will bring down the price so that it may be perfect...almost an even trade.... I feel like I am looking at the land and that the house is incidental...Can we plant a garden here? Is there a barn? This one has a huge barn at the back. The neighbors would not even "see" a cow if we raised one. We could raise two or three on 12 acres. I believe we need 5 acres to have a cow. I don't think it matters when you have chickens or rabbits. I have raised both chickens and rabbits before. I have owned a horse for 6 years. How different can a cow be? Enough space to store hay and keep him or her warm at night. I have a friend who raises black Angus. maybe he will sell me a calf and then I can pick his brain to raise him. Stay tuned...lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17688047404580674505noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5605164818011967018.post-3861525611933775092012-09-12T05:34:00.000-07:002012-09-12T05:34:35.772-07:00Change of lifestyle could mean a move..I really do not like moving..Being that is is challenging to find grass fed beef, organic produce and the like....We've been thinking of moving. We do not like moving. We have our eye on 6 acres. A brick ranch with a walk out basement that has a basement canning kitchen, a huge 32 x 48 barn and a 14 x 30 shed, just may fill the bill. Small enough to take care of but large enough to fence in and raise our own cow, chickens, and produce. There are fruit trees on the property and only a mile more for hubby to drive to work.

There is always so much work to make something "ours" We rip out carpet and install hard wood for my allergies. We do lots of hard scape and landscape. There is barely any land scape at this house.
The prospect of an organic garden and a place to raise animals is cool. A mini farm would be awesome. I have been thinking of taking an acre and growing blueberries....

Now to find out what our house is worth and see if the move is possible or worth it.lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17688047404580674505noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5605164818011967018.post-17520558743489574782012-09-10T20:18:00.002-07:002012-09-10T20:22:41.444-07:00Comfort food We had our first below 60* night. The next morning I was in the mood for homemade chicken soup. I really miss the lovely chewy bran muffins I used to make to go along with them.
My friend Margot is experimenting with some Paleo recipes. Many of the Paleo foods she makes I usually do not make, because some of them are a little higher in carbs than I can go.
This bread recipe from Elanas Pantry is worthy of a splurge... Certainly Greg can have it. His carb count does not have to be as low as mine.

Kudos to you Elana! :) Thanks for the hard work of experimentation. Here is the link to her recipe.
Excellent! I even made a little ham and cheese sandwich with it. The bread is moist and holds together. It is very filling . A couple of small slim slices are about all I can handle.lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17688047404580674505noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5605164818011967018.post-20719287185635893812012-09-08T10:17:00.001-07:002012-09-08T11:13:05.201-07:00Keeping the monster asleep...5 months of N-1 experiments April 4th to September 4th

I spent this summer out on the lake almost daily on my paddle board and researching Paleo/low carb. What I found particularly helpful is Jimmy Moore and his N-1 experiment on himself. I thought..why not do the same thing?

I read the The Art and Science of the Low Carb Lifestyle, Good calories, Bad Calories...among about 20 other books , countless blogs, Marks daily apple, Diatruth.com. . I listened to countless helpful podcasts. There had to be something that would work. Other people achieve good health... I refuse to give up on myself or get discouraged. I no longer take allergy meds.My pain and inflammation was nil. My blood pressure was better but my belly fat was tenaciously sticking to me.

One thing this summer that struck a chord in me was..."it takes about 3 weeks to become Keto adapted. After that my body begins to burn it's own fat for fuel.( Ketogenic) . When I switch over to eating anything that causes a blood sugar rise again...my body must become Keto adapted all over again." Some where in all the blogs, books and podcasts, this theme has begun to make sense.

My weekly free days were messing me up. Stopping fat from burning...Keeping insulin too high in my blood stream ....So the free days became free meals, then they turned into one free food/ week... and finally in August....they turned into NO FREE ANYTHING. Keto adaption for me has to be under 30 carbs. Somedays I go under 20 and some days I have none. The carbs I eat are basically raw, fresh, dark and green. I put a quarter stick of Kerrygold unsalted butter in my coffee (bulletproof coffee) and I eat avocado and coconut oil daily.

April 4, 2012

The results are finally beginning to show... most of the fat loss has occurred after August 1st, when I really buckled down to try and get keto adapted. I also cut my protein portions in half and upped my daily fat.
